If It Was Your Home…

There has been relatively little talk about the BP oil spill. For such a big disaster, I’m surprised there haven’t been many people calling BP out on the matter. Especially here in Greece, the matter seems to be getting little attention. Hopelessly little when it’s the largest natural disaster to hit the US we’re talking about. One could say that Greece has its own problems at this time, but even like that, people just don’t seem to care unless it’s their home.

So, what if it was YOUR home?

This is what the people behind www.ifitwasmyhome.com must have thought… It’s a site trying to raise awareness about the BP oil spill. It has live streaming video of the spill (yes there’s a camera thousands of meters below the surface) but most importantly, they have a Google Map with a representation of the oil spill layered on it, at the location of the actual spill. This is a great way to comprehend the extent of the damage done, but for anyone who’s not from New Orleans or the southern coast of the US it means little. What’s best about the site is that you can move this layered spill anywhere you want in the world and see what it would look like over your home. I put in my post code in Nea Smyrni and this is what came up.

And what about the creatures whose home was the Gulf of Mexico? The photographs speak of themselves. I’m warning you, they’re not easy to swollow…

I am lost for words… There’s nothing that has not been said anymore. Things will only change if people unplug their ears and, most importantly, their minds…

  1. hmm yea…I agree and disagree. First of all i care. Yea i live in Greece so why would i care? Well because we proved once again how stupid we humans are and our stupidity went sky high with this. Apart from that you know where i work Hall, i sell BP motor oils in my inventory and with this shit people that are so environmental sensitive like you wont buy my stuff. So thats bad for my company if i cant sell my stuff and i have nothing to do with BP i am just a merchant. And somehow i agree with the people that are saying we got bigger issues than to worry about this. When people are working to make some money and feed their families the environment will be the last of their worries and i agree with them. It is bad though i mean a disaster like this shouldnt go unnoticeable what then again think of the situation that Greece is facing.

By the way the posts are recent and i havent seen you online for a while…..hmmm

  2. Always nice to see a comment from you! 🙂 You are right, it’s not the merchants fault and they shouldn’t be held responsible or be forced to pay for the disaster. Since you can feel the oil spill affecting you as much as anybody, you should be taking my side. If this spill hadn’t happened, people wouldn’t be boycotting BP products and there would be no problem. It is time for everyone to understand that environmental catastrophes have far-reaching implications and aren’t just hippie nightmares. Just as the drought of a river or the burning of a forest can seriously detriment the lives of people living around the affected areas, the disaster itself is the top of a pyramid with a forever-widening base. It’s not just people living in Louisiana and Texas; it is you, the BP merchant, that feels the negative effects of it. It’s the global oil market that can be affected by such a huge spill.

And yes, whenever I’m on MSN (rarely!) you’re not on. So what can we do…

  3. first of all i am not a bp merchant:P well i carry their products in my inventory which sometimes are in big quantities due to the fact that greeks are loyal to bp. Anyways how to say it ? hmmm well you can care but starting to take actions such as boycotting on products isnt always good…It doesnt affect me much i mean i sell 100 other brands:P but still its something for me and others that are only specialized on bp products and yea i do care that its a disaster but people care about the money that will end in their pockets(if this happens taking into account the situation) as well because they like to pay the rent and they like to feed their families and in times like Greece is facing its the least of their worries…And trust me on this one i had a discussion or two with people about the bp incident, yea they said its terrible but whats the point to worry about something that is happening miles miles away from your home when you are already having problems in your country your salary is going down more taxes cant pay the loan i somehow understand the people that they “dont care”. “Survival” always comes first feeding your family, paying the rent, paying the bills etc is more than enough for someone to handle and doesnt make him pay the attention that he should…
