Jimmy Wales’ statement is as revolting as the discussion under it. I would suggest that you read it, but only if you have the stomach for tens of “skeptics” parrotting the mainstream opinions about woo, parapsychology etc, claiming the truth and the high ground of knowledge as they usually do. Even the article itself is taking clear sides without shame.

Do these people know anything about the subject? Does Jimmy Wales know anything about the subject, he who with one broad swath pigeonholes so many people as lunatic charlatanes? I don’t know whether this technique in particular has had successes, explicable or inexplicable, in doing what it says it does, I haven’t looked into it to be honest, but I’ve seen the same discussion surrounding “pseudoscience” too many times to count.

Why this hate? Why this elitism? Why this aversion to exploration of the fringes? When did science become all about defending what’s already known? I thought the opposite was the main idea. Is materialist science, peer-reviewd journals, wikipedia, Richard Dawkins and the rest, parts of a bulletproof world theory anyway?

No, they’re not. Far from it. And if you want to know why, you should absolutely read The Science Delusion (title insisted upon by publisher) by Rupert Sheldrake. His main idea is that science and the scientific method are generally good at giving answers about our world, but, just like organised religion 500 years ago did, it has become too inflexible, too bulky, too dogmatic, too rid of assumptions, too sure of itself and too dismissive to be of any real use today. Meanwhile, it’s hindering research that could further our understanding of the world in unimaginable ways.

What’s interesting is that Sheldrake in this book provides us with -what’s normally considered as- hard evidence for a world that cannot be explained materialistically. That includes results of real peer-reviewed experiments that point to the reality of things like brainless memories, statistically significant telepathy and many more chin-stroke-worthy phenomena that truly test mainstream science’s beliefs of what should or shouldn’t be possible.

After reading the book, I checked Rupert Sheldrake’s Wikipedia entry just to see reactions to his work from the scientific communituy. Not surprisingly, the discussion was not much more sophisticated than what I witnessed in the link at the top of this review: accusations of pseudoscience, charlatanism etc pervaded the articles, indications that the skeptics hadn’t really comprehended the criticism aimed at their methodology and worldview, didn’t follow up on the bibliography, plainly assuming that there must have been something wrong with it (confirmation bias), or that they simply didn’t even read the book. Richard Dawkins has said, after all, that he doesn’t want to discuss evidence when it comes to inexplicable phenomena, raising questions about whether he’s really interested in the truth or not – in my personal experience, most skeptics do not have furthering their understanding of our world at the top of their priorities.

In any case, I find the accusations against Sheldrake, and this book in particular, hollow: The Science Delusion has close to 40 pages of notes and bibliography of actual experiments to back it up and Sheldrake’s style and prose themselves are lucid as well as restrained. Even in the parts in which he discusses the inability of science to interpret the phenomena, where he proposes his own theory of morphing resonance as a possible explanation -the parts I enjoyed the least because I cannot exactly grasp the concept of morphic resonance-, he does so without conviction, but rather with the spirit of the curious researcher. A true scientist in my book. The skeptics’ reaction to his work seems to disregard all of this completely; they treat him like they would any old fraud.

But I understand: scientists are also people. What would it have been normal for them to do in the face of rejection of their entire lives’ work plus a few hundred years of tradition? Accept their failure? Accept their dogmatism? Just as scientists are people, science is also a human activity, and as most of human activities do, it also suffers from the same problems human beings generally have, only in a larger, more chaotic scale.

Finally, one more reason I appreciated this book so much was that it was… tender. At the other side of the raging skeptics and this blind rejection there is investigation, there is respect, there is a belief in a state of things that resonated deeply with me. Maybe it’s because Sheldrake’s main field of research has been biology that he shows such love for plants, animals and life in general. For whatever reason, it warmed my heart and made me think that if I ever was a real scientist, Sheldrake would be my rold model: a fighter for truth against the faux fighters for truth, the romantic gardener who everybody calls a hippie but he alone sees what everybody else is too blind to see.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is exactly the kind of book I enjoy. Witty, funny, made me think (each chapter about another facet of life), made me want to read it again sometime in the future –if only to be adequately prepared to duly take notes/highlight quotes from the first to the last page–, I learned things I would have hardly had the chance to find anywhere else and, as the best and most successful of books do, it left me with a different perspective on the world, an outlook on it that is very scientific in its premise and execution but far from anything dogmatic. It has been a humbling reminder and a glorious reassurance of how little we know about the world and at the same time how much we pretend to actually do so because, well… because we’re largely ignorant, scientists not terribly less so than ourselves.

Bill Bryson hops from one scientific field to the next as if he was Super Mario and science was Level 1-1. Within the pages of the same book we can find excellent write-ups on atoms, chemistry, lots of physics and biology, astronomy, geology… He talks about what’s under our feet (tens of kilometres of unexplored crust and a little less of ocean is all we can safely say about the contents of the ~6500km that separate us from the planet core), fossils and how little information they can give us because of their scarcity and the extremely specific conditions under which they form but how much information we try to extract from them…

How unprotected, really, we are in reality from a potential asteroid hit (no, you can’t send nukes or Bruce Willis to an object that you are only able to detect mere weeks before impact at best and which travels at a speed that allows it to cross the entirety of the terrestrial atmosphere within a matter of a single second), or how rumbling, overdue supervolcanos with calderas only slightly larger than the island of Crete could explode any moment now! Earth would survive. Life would probably survive, as it has many times before. Humans and our extremely narrow zone of comfort? Naaah. Bryson helps us understand our place in things, comprehend that our existence might be little more than an inexplicable natural accident, an unrepeatable oddity.

And of course there’s so much more packed in here. So much!

If you’re to read this book, prepare to also read things you would have never imagined about the unknown lives of great scientists, to see fundamental theories of the past go through high and low, be torn apart by dogmatic contemporary peers… The drama of science –what an unlikely, unfortunately, pair of words– and the success and sob stories behind the pioneers and discoveries are often unbelievable. These anecdotes are solid gold.

Together with What On Earth Happened/What On Earth Evolved, this book is a treasure of knowledge and insight. If you like learning stuff about the world for hours on end you seriously can’t miss it. Even if you don’t find learning about the world appealing, well… maybe these books will kick your characteristically human curiosity back into you.

Did you know that every bamboo in the world flowers simultaneously once every few years? Had you ever imagined that if you pulverised a sponge the cells would gather together again to form the initial form in a perfect reconstruction? Had it ever occurred to you that, unlike other species like dogs, horses or chickens, people keep cats for no practical reason? Have you ever thought about the relevant speciesist implications? Did you know that elephants mourn their dead and visit elephant graveyards (yes like the ones in The Lion King) to pay their respects? Would you imagine that about 20% of the world’s oxygen comes from a kind of oceanic bacteria? Did you know that smallpox hasn’t really been eradicated — in fact, if unleashed today, it would eradicate a great percentage of the human population? Would you have ever known that most wheat — the basis for a great lot of our food today — cannot even reproduce naturally anymore because humans have bred it to have seeds so large they cannot even leave the ear and thus must be manually assisted?

“What on Earth Evolved?” and its 400-page insight into humanity’s and Earth’s organic history is full of such facts that are definitely going to stick with you. Just ask any of my friends or other people in my social circle if I haven’t been annoying them with jaw-dropping factoids about any of the one hundred species involved in this book, 50 that made their impact before humanity emerged and 50 that affected, and were affected by, us self-proclaimed owners of the Earth throughout our history. This unlikely menagerie has it all: from chickens to the supposed HIV virus, from roses to dragonflies, from cannabis to sharks, from dogs to eucalyptus trees, from ants to bats and from chilli peppers to trilobites.

Just like “What on Earth Happened?”, the sequel promises to change or add to your perspective on things. Humanity’s “special privileges”, our relationship with the rest of the world, the holistic importance of everything there is and all that is no more but once reigned supreme. This book will make you think, it’ll make you look around at life out there through a different eye. This is the stuff children would learn at school in a perfect world (the artistic design in fact, would be deceptively compatible with such a science class at school: minimalism meets cute drawings? Yes!).

This is “On the Origins of Species” on cultural steroids, it’s Darwin for Dummies and I could not mean that in a better way.
