Ρε Χωλλ! Πριν κάποιες εβδομάδες έχασα (πάλι) το MP3 player μου — ή μάλλον μου το κλέψανε, δεν θα μάθω ποτέ. Ήταν στα Γιάννενα, στο Game Core, το ίντερνετ καφέ όπου ξεκίνησα να γράφω αυτό το ποστίο, και ήταν το μπλε Sansa Clip Zip μου που πολύ το αγαπούσα και με είχε συντροφέψει σε πολλές διαδρομές, τρεχάλες και όμορφες στιγμές. Είχα μέσα φορτωμένο Beirut, Sigur Ros, Steven Wilson, Tim Minchin, King Crimson, Θανάση, Gramatik, Conversations with God, το Sapiens, πολλά επεισόδια Mysterious Universe, και μια ηχογράφηση από έναν κύριο στην Κερκίνη ο οποίος μας είχε παίξει έναν αργό ρυθμό στο τυμπανό του και έλεγε ότι αν το παίζαμε αυτό κάθε μέρα (ή μήπως ήταν κάθε βδομάδα;) για 10 λεπτά η ζωή μας θα γινόταν καλύτερη. Ότι θα μπαίναμε σε έναν ρυθμό. Δεν θυμάμαι ακριβώς τι είχε πει, αλλα μου φαινόταν τότε πολύ βαθύ και καλή συμβουλή. Δεν το ξανάκουσα ποτέ, παρόλο που το είχα ηχογραφήσει τότε με το Sansa. Ίσως επειδή το είχα ηχογραφήσει με το Sansa.
Συνειδητοποίησα κάποια πράγματα αγοράζοντας από τα Public Αλεξανδρούπολης (μακάρι να υπήρχε η ποικιλία για να τον αγοράσω από αλλού) τον αντικαστάτη του παλιού μου Sansa: ότι όσον αφορά τα consumer electronics, (πώς τα λένε αυτά στα ελληνικά;) μετά από τον αριθμό κινητών που έχω αλλάξει, ο οποίος ούτως ή άλλως είναι ανησυχητικά τεράστιος και είμαι μόνο ένας άνθρωπος σε έναν ωκεανό ανθρώπων– αμέσως μετά έρχονται τα MP3 players.
Όσα πέρασαν ποτέ από τα χέρια μου ήρθαν κι έφυγαν, χωρίς να αφήσουν πίσω τους τίποτα. Αυτά τα γκατζετάκια που πριν τα αποκτήσω και πριν τα αγοράσω (ή μου τα αγοράσουν) ερευνούσα τόσο πολύ, κάθε παράμετρο, δέκα χρόνια μετά ή λιγότερα δεν μπορώ να θυμηθώ σχεδόν αν ποτέ μου ανήκαν ή όχι. Λίγες και αποσπασματικές αναμνήσεις έχω μαζί τους, και συνήθως πρέπει συνειδητά να τα προσθέσω σε ένα νοητικό κάδρο που είναι συνταγή για πλαστές αναμνήσεις, παρά ανήκουν οργανικά εκεί στην ανάμνηση. Μάλλον με τα περισσότερα πράγματα γίνεται αυτό, η νοητική προσθήκη εννοώ, αλλά τέλος πάντων.
Όντας πλέον μιας κάποιας ηλικίας ώστε να έχει νόημα μια τέτοια μικρή αναπώληση, ας πάω πίσω σε όλα τα players που είχα κάποτε που μπορώ να θυμηθώ, γιατί είμαι σίγουρος ότι κάποια δεν θα τα θυμάμαι, ξεκινώντας από την εποχή που άρχισα να έχω κάποιο δικό μου γούστο στη μουσική πέρα των game themes. Πείτε γύρω στα 14.
Το πρώτο μου MP3 player έπαιζε MP3 CD. Δεν ήταν Philips, δεν θυμάμαι καν βασικά τι μάρκα ήταν, ήταν δώρο Χριστουγέννων του 2003 και μου έσπασε τα νεύρα πολύ γρήγορα. Δεν θυμάμαι τον λόγο. Δεν έπαιζε καλά τα CD? Δεν άνοιγε; Δεν φόρτιζε; Η μπαταρία κράταγε λίγο; Κόλλαγε; Κάτι τέτοιο. Η μουσική που άκουγα τότε έχει σχεδόν μηδενική υπερκάλυψη με αυτή που ακούω σήμερα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των game themes, και με το ζόρι είχα αρχίσει να ακούω Pink Floyd. Φανταστείτε… Κατέληξε στον τότε κολλητό μου Άλντο, όπως και πολλά άλλα από τα ηλεκτρονικά μου που δεν ήθελα πια μικρός.
To Ρόμπα το είχα εκεί, το 2004, γύρω στα 15 ήμουν. 256MB! Χωρίς δίσκους ή CD! ΤΟ ΜΕΛΛΟΝ! Ήταν το πρώτο μου MP3 player όπως θα τα αναγνωρίζαμε σήμερα. Δεν θυμάμαι πόσο το είχα και τι απέγινε, θυμάμαι όμως ότι είχε ένα παρόμοιο ο Φάνης. Έκανε μεταξύ 150 και 200€.
Το πολυαγαπημένο μου «ποταμάκι». Δώρο γενεθλίων το 2005, με λεφτά τσονταρισμένα και από τους δύο μου γονείς και από τους συζύγους τους τότε. Έκανε γύρω στα 350€ αν θυμάμαι καλά, το είχα μέχρι το 2008. Μου το κλέψανε στη Ρώμη όταν είχαμε ταξιδέψει στην Ευρώπη με την Αλεξ. Κοιμόμασταν με βάρδιες στον κεντρικό σταθμό περιμένοντας να ξημερώσει για να πάρουμε το τραίνο για Ανκόνα, η emobagα μου ήταν ανοιχτή, και ένας δαιμόνιος Ιταλός ελαφροχέρης το πήρε. Θα είδε την δερμάτινη θήκη και θα γλυκάθηκε. Τον είδα με την άκρη του ματιού μου, αλλά όταν κατάλαβα τι είχε γίνει ήταν αργά. Θα μπορούσε να είχε κλέψει το πορτοφόλι μου ή το DS Lite μου, το οποίο εντάξει, το έχασα και χωρίς βοήθεια τελικά μερικούς μήνες αργότερα.
Το iRiver μου άρεσε πολύ. 20GB (είχε σκληρό δίσκο, όπως τα φρέσκα iPod που μόλις ξεκίναγαν να γίνονται μόδα παγκοσμίως), πολλή μπαταρία, εντυπωσιακή οθόνη για την εποχή—μπορούσε να παίξει μέχρι και βίντεο αν το έφτιαχνες σωστά και έκανες την κατάλληλη μετατροπή. Είχα πειραματιστεί με το να βλέπω άνιμε σε αυτό το μηχανηματάκι αλλά μετά ήταν μεγάλη μανούρα να μετατρέπεις κάθε βίντεο ξεχωριστά και είχαν πολύ μικρό framerate. Σε κάποια φάση του είχα αλλάξει και το firmware και είχα βάλει Rockbox αλλά το βαρέθηκα γρήγορα.
Αν το είχα ακόμα, με μια αλλαγή μπαταρίας θα δούλευε άψογα είμαι σίγουρος. Σκυλί. Πόσο να κάνει να αγοράσεις ένα τέτοιο μεταχειρισμένο;
Ή μήπως ήταν 4GB; Πότε το πήρα; Δεν θυμάμαι… και δεν θυμάμαι καν πόσο το είχα. Ξέρω μόνο ότι έκανε γύρω στα 80€ και το έχασα στη Δανία. Μου το κλέψανε σε ένα μαγαζί με second-hand ρούχα.
EDIT: Θυμήθηκα από άκυρη φάση ότι έχω φωτογραφίες με το Mozaic και άθλια ακουστικά που είχα τότε (περισσότερα σχετικά με τα ακουστικά μετά). Έβγαζα σελφιζ με τρίποδο, την e-510 και τηλεκοντρόλ, του οποίου το υπέρηθρο φωτάκι σκέφτηκα ότι θα έβγαινε στις φωτό, και είχα δίκιο.
Δεν θυμάμαι καν αν χάλασε ότι το πέταξα στη Βαλτική απ’ τα νεύρα μου.
Αδιάβροχο κινητό που πήρα το 2012 το οποίο τελικά δεν άντεξε τις επανειλημμένες δοκιμασίες αντοχής του στο νερό.
Ένα μικρό απόσπασμα σχετικά με την πρώτη φορά που παρα λίγο να πνιγεί το κινητό αυτό. Παρμένο από ένα forum που είχα γράψει τότε όταν είχα νιώσει πολύ σκατά για αυτό και η εμπειρία είχε τα χνώτα της ζεστά στον σβέρκο μου:
Σε αυτό το κινητάκι άρχισα να ακούσω audiobooks και podcasts—Dan Carlin, The Higherside Chats, Eckhart Tolle, την ραδιοφωνική εκπομπή του Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy… Τότε είχα λιώσει το Collecting Space και το The 78 του Στιβάκου, τους Amplifier και τον Devin Townsend. Από τα αγαπημένα μου χαρακτηριστικά ήταν που είχε πεδόμετρο, και άρχισα να περπατάω περισσότερο για να βγαίνει πενταψήφια μέτρηση όσο το δυνατόν πιο συχνά. Με είχε βολέψει, αλλά ναι, βρήκε τον υγρό του τάφο έναν χρόνο μετά, παρ’ότι είχε επιζήσει από το πρώτο waterboarding. Το είχα βάλει στη θάλασσα βράδυ με τον φακό αναμένο. Βλέπαμε με τη Δάφνη αχινούς να περπατάνε, όπως περιγράφω στο πρώτο λινκ. Και ο φακός έσβησε και δεν ξανάναψε ποτέ.
Το να πεθάνει το αδιάβροχο κινητό από δυο εμβαπτίσεις το βρίσκω πάντως πολύ ποιητικό. Έζησε Μάρτιο του ’12 με Ιούνιο του ’13.
Όταν το παραπάνω Samsung πνίγηκε, η Δάφνη μου δάνεισε ένα δικό της που είχε πριν πάρει smartphone, κι ήταν και για μένα το κινητό που είχα μέχρι να πάρω το πρώτο μου smartphone. Με το κινητό αυτό ξεκίνησα το C25K, να τρέχω δηλαδή. Βόλεψε γιατί είχε χρονόμετρο, γύρους κτλ, αλλά με το Podrunner δεν χρειαζόταν—έβαζα το αρχείο, έπαιζε, κι εκείνο με ειδοποιούσε για το πότε να σταματήσω, πότε να ελαττώσω ταχύτητα κτλ.
Είναι ίσως η μόνη συσκευή από όλες αυτές που ακόμα ζει ή δεν χάθηκε.
Ήμουν έτοιμος να βάλω εδώ μια εικόνα της Σάνσα από το Game of Thrones αλλά κρατήθηκα.
Tο αγόρασα τον Αύγουστο του 2014 όταν αποφάσισα ότι δεν ήθελα πια να παίρνω όλο το κινητό μαζί μου για τρέξιμο και προτιμούσα κάτι πιο φορητό που να έχει και clip. Με μέγεθος σπιρτόκουτου, εσωτερική μνήμη 4GB, ενισχυτή, υποδοχή microSD, υποστήριξη FLAC και πολλών άλλων φορμά, καλές κριτικές και με τιμή μόλις 35€, δεν μου έκανε εντύπωση που πολλοί κάτοχοι του μικρού αυτού Sansa έγραφαν ότι είχαν αγοράσει 3+ συσκευές για να έχουν στοκ. Τόσο καλό εργαλειάκι ήταν.
Κι εκείνου του έβαλα δοκιμαστικά Rockbox όπως είχα κάνει στο iRiver, γιατί εντάξει, είχε κάποια προβληματάκια με το interface, κυρίως με την εύρεση των αρχείων γιατί δεν είχε folder view, αλλά κι εκείνο δεν με τρέλανε και το έβγαλα σύντομα.
Τον περισσότερο χρόνο στο Σάνσα μου σίγουρα τον έφαγα ακούγοντας Mysterious Universe (ακόμα δεν έχω γράψει τίποτα γι’ αυτό το αγαπημένο podcast, ε;) αλλά και διάφορα βιβλία, στο τρέξιμο και στα όργανα του άλσους Νέας Σμύρνης. Περισσότερο audiobook player ήταν παρά μουσικής, από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Μέχρι την μοιραία νύχτα στο Game Core…
Όταν έχασα το Σάνσα μου, στενοχωρήθηκα κυρίως γιατί δεν θα μπορούσα να βρω ένα ίδιο, ιδιαίτερα στην Αλεξανδρούπολη και στη Σαμοθράκη όπου είχα μόλις φτάσει. Εδώ και χρόνια έχουν αποσυρθεί και αντικατασταθεί από μοντέλα με περίπου ίδιο λογισμικό, διπλάσια μπαταρία (μέχρι 25 ώρες!!), πιο αδύναμο επεξεργαστή (που δεν τρέχει Rockbox), firmware που έχει επιτέλους folder view αλλά με πολύ αργό rewind στα αρχεία μεγάλου μήκους τύπου audiobook για παράδειγμα, μεγαλύτερο μέγεθος και χειρότερη οθόνη. Και τιμή λιανικής 50€ αντί για 35€.
Μολαταύτα, η διπλάσια μπαταρία είναι σημαντικό πλεονέκτημα, και μάλλον υπερτερεί των άλλων πισωγυρισμάτων. Και πρέπει να πω πως βάζοντας του μια 16άρα microSD, έφτασε και ξεπέρασε την χωρητικότητα που κάποτε είχε το ποταμάκι, το iRiver, το πρώτο μου player.
Ελπίζω να μην το χάσω και αυτό και να μου κρατήσει για κάποια χρόνια. Όχι όχι, δεν υπάρχει «ελπίζω», υπάρχει «πιστεύω».
Μόλις συνειδητοποίησα ότι γράφοντας για τα players, πρέπει να γράψω κάτιτις για τα ακουστικά που έχω χάσει. Αυτά που έχασα με το Clip Zip, κάτι Sennheiser CX200 νομίζω, πρέπει να ήταν τα 5632α που χάνω. Τα τελευταία χρόνια τα χρήματα που έχω ρίξει σε ακουστικά που πλέον δεν έχω στην κατοχή μου πρέπει να είναι ξεπερνάνε την τιμή ενός… χμ… βάλτε κάτι ακριβό, αλλά όχι πολύ ακριβό. Πείτε ένα 3DS. Μεταχειρισμένο. Δεν πειράζει, για βιλία και podcast καλά είναι και τα ακουστικά αυτά που σου δίνουν δώρο…
Ξέρετε τι θα ήθελα μόνο; Υποστήριξη για Audioscrobbler και πεδομέτρηση, για να μην χρειάζεται να κουβαλάω το 3DS παντού ψυχαναγκαστικά και να βάζω στο κινητό apps που το κρατάνε ξύπνιο ή δεν λειτουργούν καθόλου—looking at you, Runtastic. Το scrobbler θα ήταν ενδιαφέρον, αν και, τελικά, λίγο μάταιο. Το last.fm μου δεν ανταποκρίνεται καθόλου στην πραγματικότητα πια. Αφού το ξεκίνησα όταν ακόμα είχα το ποταμάκι, που και για αυτό, τότε, έψαχνα τρόπο να συνδέσω με το last.fm μου. Και όπως μου αρέσει να κάνω, ας αναρωτηθώ πια είναι η χρησιμότητα, τελικά, του να έχεις last.fm. Εκτός από το να βρίσκεις τα κομμάτια που είχες στο Grooveshark αλλά επειδή διαγράφηκε το Grooveshark έχασες, όμως στο last.fm έχουν σωθεί. Μάλλον: τι είναι αυτό που με κάνει να θέλω στο πίσω μέρος του μυαλού μου κάτι να καταγράφει τι ακούω; Εμένα και άλλους πολλούς; Είναι ότι φοβόμαστε τον θάνατο και τη λήθη πιο πολύ από οποιαδήποτε άλλη εποχή τελικά, μήπως;
Γιατί όταν μιλάω για μένα συχνά χρησιμοποιώ πρώτο πληθυντικό αντί για πρώτο ενικό; Είναι για να νιώθω λιγότερο άσχημα για πράγματα που με κάνουν και νιώθω άβολα, κάνοντας προβολή την αμηχανία μου στον ευρύτερο κόσμο; Γιατί κάνω τόσες ερωτήσεις που δεν έχω καν πρόθεση να απαντήσω ποτέ;
Αν υπήρχε κάποιο πόιντ σε αυτό το ποστ, δεν ξέρω ποιο έιναι πια. Ίσως ότι τα MP3 Players έχουν ζωή, παρά την υπέρτατη κυριαρχία των κινητών. Άλλο πράγματα τα κουμπάκια αντί για οθόνη αφής, κι άλλο πράγμα το σπιρτόκουτο σε σύγκριση με την γκουμούτσα. Τι να κάνουμε.
Και κάτι ακόμα: από ένα σημείο και μετά έγινε πολύ λιγότερο φετιχιστικό το όλο θέμα με τα ηλεκτρονικά για μένα, αφού δεν θυμάμαι τόσο καθαρά της λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με τις συσκευές που είχα πιο πρόσφατα, όσο για αυτές που είχα 10 χρόνια πριν. Κατάλαβα ότι είναι συσκευές και χάνονται, ή πεθαίνουν, ίσως—τα παντα ρει, ουδέν μένει;
Το ποταμάκι όμως θα το θυμάμαι πάντα.

Three years ago tonight, Beduin had been open — more than open.
Last time I checked, it had a “for rent” sign hanging on the metal shutters there to stop any curious passer-by from taking a look inside.
It was one of my favourite places in Athens, but I don’t feel as sad to see it go as I thought I would be. I recognize it all for what it is: something dying to give its place to something that’s just been conceived. I’m happy I crossed paths with it, that I experienced it. But I would have taken it in a bit more consciously last time I was there if I had known I would never get to smell it, taste it or see it again. As Beduin, that is, for who knows what might take its place.
This post is a combination of two fantastic pieces of work: Daphne’s article on Erasmus+ she wrote a few months ago which comprises the bulk of this post, and Giorgi’s collection of Greek organisations that run European Erasmus+ projects that is a bit more comprehensive than the one Daphne put together. You will find that list at the bottom of the article.
It can be a bit difficult to navigate through the vast, decentralised and chaotic field of European Youth Programs. That and the fact that lot of it can sound too good to be true sometimes might discourage potential participants. Stick with it: it is true! The European Union’s allocation of funds might certainly be questionable in some areas (let’s not go there at this time, you know exactly what I’m talking about ), but there’s no doubt they’re investing tons of money in education and the future with Erasmus+.
Not all of it finds its way to the right hands, which could be said about all sort of freebie European Union money that’s come our way. However, you could definitely make the case that the same holds true for money as a concept in more general terms. But I digress—sorry, difficult to resist.
These big investments are part of a bigger picture, a plan so devious, its scope so ambitious, its goal so far-removed, it could only ever have been spawned in a bright, sterile meeting room in Brussels, in the incandescent depths of the HQ of the European Commission itself. Their goal, behind all of these lifelong-learning and informal education bells and whistles, is the creation of nothing less than a common identity among young Europeans, a veritable European identity for the people who will have to deal with this shitstorm of gargantuan proportions heading our way, the true proportions of which we’re just starting to understand. That’s us, by the way.
I can’t tell if it’s working or not yet, or if perhaps creating this identity could be forming a barrier against the millions of non-Europeans that have started once again to enter European societies. But it can work; these programs teach tolerance and coexistence, after all. I do believe identifying as European can also mean accepting as European people who previously were not. It’s not, or at least it shouldn’t be, a limited-membership club. It wasn’t so in the past, and there’s no reason it should be now. That’s not how I look at peoples and nations at least and I’m glad I’m not alone.
Anyway. If we want to pull through this, all of this, as best we can, we need (informally) educated, internationally-oriented, risk-taking, adaptable and sensitive young people with a spirit of co-operation and participation. Erasmus+ programs are incredibly good at inspiring all these qualities in participants, and more.
Ahem. This was supposed to be “just” a guest post. With this introduction of mine I was certainly planning to be shorter, I leave you to them. I hope this information proves useful to you. In fact, it can be quite life-changing, if you want or can allow it to.
This post has been long overdue. Since my first youth exchange in June 2013, I’ve talked with an ever-growing amount of people about what I do abroad, how I managed to find these projects, how it’s possible to do so many of them if I’m always broke as fuck and what exactly do I even get from them.
The last conversation I had was with the guys from the coding course I attended this week, and some of them showed great interest in what I had to say, since I already know a lot about these things. I absolutely despise talking, I get nervous and awkward and am unable to explain things properly, so writing is a much better way to get all this information out there.
So finally, here it is. A resource post with all the info and organisations I know about that have to do with youth mobility. Please, feel free to comment under my post if you are part of/know an organisation that you believe should be included in the list! Of course, I recognize that even my knowledge is quite limited compared to people that are actively involved in Erasmus+ as part of an organisation.
First things first: What on earth is Erasmus+? (here is a bit more detailed page)
When people hear the word “Erasmus”, they instantly think that it’s all about the student mobility thing. Well, guess what. In short, Erasmus+ is the EU’s new programme for boosting skills and employability through education, training, youth, and sport. Before that there was Youth in Action.
The funding for the whole project is channeled to each country through the National Agencies. Through their pages you can find projects and information in your own language and contact them for inquiries.
So the lists that follow include NGOs that are either Sending (SO), Hosting (HO) or Coordinating (CO) organisations, or even all of the above! As copy-pasted from the programme guide, these mean:
These may all sound kind of (or largely) unclear, so what essentially happens is, you find a SO in your country of residence, you apply for one of the projects they are offering (could be an EVS, or a training, or a youth exchange), you get accepted (or not), and you get to go to the country where that project is taking place. You’re hosted there by the HO. How to explain with clear, precise ELI5 wording what the CO part is still a bit unclear for me as well, so I would appreciate corrections and help here.
Personally, the crown and pride and glory of the Erasmus+ programme is European Voluntary Service, or EVS for short. It’s what I’ll be doing in the Netherlands from September 2nd.
Again, in short, if you are between 17 and 30, have spare time from two weeks up to a year in your hands, want to do something creative with your time, have no money to fund your interests, travel, meet other cultures and a horde of other like-minded people, EVS is for you. I strongly recommend it to people who are fresh out of university or school, have been unemployed for some time or just love travelling and experiencing new things. Or all of these! Important:
You will receive free accommodation, food, insurance and pocket money. The only thing you might have to pay is a small part of your travel costs.
Also important, you can only do EVS once in your life. If it’s a short-term project, you may be eligible to apply for a second EVS, but the time you spend abroad must be in total one year. Consider the possibilities carefully, because not everything is rainbows and unicorns. There are terrible projects out there, and people who just want to eat up the funding money. But don’t be discouraged like this – talk with people, do your research, ask me for recommendations and you’ll have the time of your life.
You can find ALL of the EVS projects here. You can search by country/town of preference and type of the project you want. The themes are extremely diverse. For example, I was a mentor of EVS volunteers who worked in TRAG, including therapeutic riding sessions for disabled people and of volunteers who worked in the offices of Greek Forum of Refugees.
In this European Youth page, you can also find other volunteering opportunities here, but I’ve never really participated in something like this so I can’t be of much help. Here you can find their Facebook page. I like organising things in lists, so I have put every page I’ll mention here in special list on Facebook. Good that it’s kinda worth it for something other than hoarding friends and stalking people.

You can probably discover the reason if you think about the state of the Greek political scene since the beginning of the year. What the suspension means is that there can be no projects implemented in the country whatsoever – no new EVS volunteers, no trainings, no youth exchanges, etc. The problems started way back of course, I remember the NA having financial difficulties for more than a year. BUT, you can still contact these NGOs to projects outside of the country – which I strongly advise you do. Most or all of these post regularly about new opportunites, be it short- or long-term. Keep in mind that even though I’m writing this in English so it can be accessed by everyone, a lot of the NGOs below have projects and information in Greek only.

I’ll start with this one as an honour, because I went to my first youth exchange through them. Everyone, meet
Based in Crete. I went through them to Finland, for a youth exchange called Creative Photography in the Finnish Wilderness, along with Garret and Dimitris. Gotta thank him for this whole business, cause he was the first to discover these things and went through Nuestro Mundo to Olde Vechte in Ommen, the Netherlands for a youth exchange in March 2013. That’s incidentally the organisation I’ll be going to for EVS.
Continuing with the organisation I was (am?) an EVS mentor for.
The Greek branch of Service Civil International. They will be my SO for going to EVS in Olde Vechte. They also organise a lot of workcamps which you can find out about in the page I linked here.
I know a couple of the guys involved here personally, and I love them. 😀
I think just their name is motivating in itself. Don’t be a couch potato.
Self-described as an informal group of ambitious people and filmmakers interested in new media & youth work.
I know their crazy dudette Antonia, who will never forgive me for taking away her tobacco.
You can also participate in workcamps through them.
They organised the last training course I went to, in Skoulikaria, Greece. They’re pretty new but have great aspirations.
I can’t remember how I found out about the rest of the NGOs, but probably through facebook shares or through people I met that knew them. Networking!
(Of course, there’s a lot more, and quite a few that are just Hosting/Receiving NGOs — meaning they can’t send out Greeks but only receive foreigners as EVS volunteers)
Other European organisations:
I will start with my favourite, since I’m going there for EVS in a couple of days. For a whole year! Woo!!
I strongly recommend attending at least one training/project happening in Olde Vechte, because you’ll start seeing your life change before your own eyes. I started with a youth exchange, and the place inspired me so much that I went back for a personal development training. From then on everything fell slowly into place and I decided it would be the best place for me to go to right now. There is an amazing amount of people who are working there, including the EVS volunteers and the trainers that come back several times per year to shake a bunch of young people up with their wise teachings.
OV is part of the Synergy Network, that organises trainings (either open calls or funded by the EU) for personal and professional development.
Right now the Spectrum Synergy project is ongoing.
Continuing in the Synergy business, I’ve also got to know some of the guys involved here. They’re real good! (They also have a wonderful partner page)
Moar Synergy. Their team has some amazing members and I’ve wanted to participate in some action with them for a long time, but I never got the chance. Soon, I hope!
Never had to do anything with these guys but I’m pretty sure they’re awesome too.

Another NGO that is involved with Synergy and a long-term wish of mine to get involved in. Hungary.
More Balkan stuff, specifically Bulgarian. I went back and forth so many times in 2014 that it will always be in my heart, even though I wasn’t closely involved with any NGO there. Most of the info is in Bulgarian.

Cyprus! I visited (and was hosted at the volunteer’s places) both of them when I was in Nicosia (thanks to Toni :D) and later got to know Iliana from YEU in a training course in Bulgaria. Small world!!

The Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organisations is an International Non-Governmental Youth Organisation that represents national organisations which promote intercultural education, understanding and peace through voluntary service.
The European Youth Foundation (EYF) provides assistance and funding for youth activities which promote human rights, democracy, tolerance and solidarity.

I discovered Tim Minchin through Toni, through Daphne. I don’t agree with his attacks on alternative medicine (I want to believe he’s still on the fence on that one himself, however unlikely) but overall I’m liking this guy more and more. Plus he’s Australian.
10 μήνες μετά αυτό το επεισόδιο! Τουλάχιστον δεν κλείσαμε χρόνο. Το γράφημα ημερομηνία λήψης/ημερομηνία δημοσίευσης ξαναπήρε την κατιούσα (αυτό είναι καλό, κι ας ακούγεται το «κατιούσα»–katyusha?–σαν κάτι το κακό)!
Σε αυτό το επεισόδιο που ηχογραφήσαμε σε ένα μπαράκι του Βελιγραδίου με τη Δάφνη, συζητήσαμε και αναρωτηθήκαμε:
..και πολλά άλλα, στο πιο πολιτικό επεισόδιο μέχρι τώρα. Απολαύστε! Ο τίτλος σημαίνει «Βαλκανικά αδέρφια», btw. Α, και η λέξη που δεν θυμόμουν: legacy στα ελληνικά: υστεροφημία, θα μπορούσε να είναι μία μετάφραση.

Και κάτι σχετικά με το μετρό της Αθήνας που αναφέρουμε στο podcast: η Αττικό Μετρό είναι ιδιωτική εταιρία αλλά ήταν απ’ότι φαίνεται μόνο η εταιρία κατασκευής, δεν το διαχειρίζεται αυτή τώρα. Το ερώτημα πάντως παραμένει: θα έπαιρνε λεφτά από την ΕΕ για την κατασκευή της γραμμής 4;
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a little something about doing a short media fast. Here is my experience and my short conclusion:
And this would have never existed if we hadn’t said “okay, what should we do now? Let’s paint!” — “OK, what?” — “eachother!”
But motivation is still a limited resource that can be separated into qualitative levels: you can have good motivation, bad (negative?) motivation, pure motivation and unstoppable motivation. All the lack of distraction does is bring forward the standard kind of motivation that under ordinary circumstances simply isn’t strong enough to become a greater priority than habit and addiction (media/internet). I suppose the kind of motivation we’re after is the one that needs no media fasts to rear its elusive head; it just trumps anything and everything!
But then again, you have people like Frank Herbert who just wrote— motivation, inspiration, or no… How about it, qb?

Finding the Fox by Ali Sparkes

Yet another special-boy/girl-gets-picked-up-by-special-school story in the vain of Harry Potter. With Lexicon and Idlewild, I feel like I’ve been reading loads of these lately, yet I have strangely forgotten to grow tired of them. However, it has to be said that Finding the Fox was different from these books: it was simple. Easy to follow, easy to visualize, but beautiful nonetheless. I have a soft spot for beautiful simplicity as a concept, what can I do. And I also have a soft spot for people turning into animals and very detailed descriptions of what it feels like it to be a fox.
I don’t even have to tell you the story: Finding the Fox is almost exactly like Harry Potter, the protagonist himself even more so (quasi-orphan, living with his step-parents and calling a glorified cupboard his room, special powers suddenly emerging, special school comes a-looking, special school is awesome, best part of book is exploring wonders of special school and its students). It doesn’t matter that it’s a book for preteens or early teens, I enjoyed it just the same, similarly, I expect, to how I would’ve enjoyed Harry Potter if I read it for the first time at 26.
Did I mention it’s all just so English, in the same way Harry Potter is just so sine qua non English? It couldn’t be any other way, either, similarly to when Spaced tried to be American and it realised it couldn’t bring itself to ever passably drive on the right, or say “like, like, like…” nearly annoyingly enough.
